HTML mail rendering

The process an email client uses to display formatted messages, sometimes through browser components.

HTML mail rendering is the process an email client uses to display formatted messages such as colored text, images, links, and embedded layouts. Many clients do not draw this content themselves; they rely on browser-like components or rendering engines to interpret HTML, CSS, and sometimes active content. That makes the inbox more than a text viewer: it becomes a small web runtime.

In cyber security, this matters because attackers can abuse weaknesses in the rendering stack to execute code, load remote content, or trigger unsafe behavior when a message is opened or previewed. A vulnerable client may expose users even before they click an attachment or link. Defenders reduce this risk by patching mail clients and rendering engines, disabling unnecessary active content, restricting external content, and preferring plain-text viewing where possible. Careful rendering design turns the inbox from an execution surface back into a display layer.
