HTML export

A feature that converts application data into an HTML document for viewing or archiving.

HTML export is a feature that converts application data into an HTML document for viewing or archiving. It is common in chat logs, reports, email exports, and audit records because HTML is easy to open in a browser and can preserve layout, links, and formatting.

In cyber security, HTML export matters because HTML is not inert text: browsers parse it as code. If untrusted content is copied into the export without proper context-aware encoding, an attacker can turn normal data into executable markup or script. That can lead to stored XSS when someone opens the exported file. Defenders should treat export generators like web templates, escape user-controlled fields for the right HTML context, sanitize any allowed rich text, and test with payloads such as angle brackets, quotes, and inline event handlers.
