HR files

employee records that can increase privacy and legal exposure if threatened or disclosed.

HR files are employee records kept by human resources teams. They can include payroll data, identity documents, addresses, benefits forms, performance reviews, disciplinary notes, contracts, and emergency contacts. Because they often contain personal and employment information, they are usually more sensitive than ordinary business records.

In cyber security, HR files matter because their exposure can create privacy harm, legal obligations, and leverage for attackers. Ransomware groups and other extortion actors often target or threaten to publish them to pressure an organization, and stolen HR data can also support identity theft, fraud, or spear phishing against staff. Defenders reduce risk by limiting access on a need-to-know basis, encrypting storage, logging access, applying retention rules, and separating sensitive employee records from broader shared file systems.
