A household rule is a subscription policy that limits use to a specific home, network, or set of devices tied to one residence. Streaming and other digital services use it to define where access is allowed, helping distinguish normal family use from account sharing outside the intended location.
In cyber security, a household rule is part of access control and entitlement enforcement. The service must verify login, evaluate device or network signals, and decide whether playback should be permitted. Defenders use this policy to reduce abuse, but weak implementations can be bypassed with stolen credentials, proxy or VPN use, device spoofing, or inconsistent policy checks across apps. Good design combines household rules with authentication, device limits, logging, and revocation so legitimate users stay connected while unauthorized access is blocked.
