Hotspot

a feature that lets a phone share its mobile connection with other devices.

A hotspot is a phone feature that shares the device’s mobile data connection with other devices over Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, or USB. In practice, it turns the phone into a small internet gateway for a laptop, tablet, or another handset. For travelers, this is useful when no trusted Wi‑Fi is available, but it also means the phone becomes part of the security perimeter.

In cyber security, hotspots matter because they create a new access point that must be protected. Weak hotspot passwords, reused credentials, or leaving sharing enabled can expose the connection to unauthorized users. Attackers also abuse the same idea with rogue or “evil twin” hotspots that imitate legitimate networks to capture traffic or credentials. Defenses include using WPA2/WPA3 where available, setting a strong unique password, disabling hotspot mode when not needed, and keeping connected devices updated.
