Hot-end

The heated part of a 3D printer that melts material before it is pushed through the nozzle.

A hot-end is the heated assembly at the business end of an FDM 3D printer. It warms filament or other feedstock until it softens or melts, then pushes it through a nozzle so the printer can deposit material accurately. A typical hot-end includes a heater block, heater cartridge, thermistor or temperature sensor, heat break, and nozzle. Its job is simple but critical: keep the material hot enough to flow, while preventing heat from creeping too far up the filament path.

In cyber security, hot-end behavior matters because it is controlled by firmware, sensors, and commands that can be manipulated. If an attacker changes temperatures, disables safeguards, or alters G-code, a printer can jam, under-extrude, overheat, or even become a fire risk. Defenders look for thermal runaway protection, sensor integrity, and safe firmware limits. In repurposed machines, understanding the hot-end also helps distinguish what is truly broken from what can still be reused safely.
