Hosted business applications are vendor-managed or cloud-based services that store or process an organization’s records, such as customer files, billing data, HR data, or patient identities. They run outside the organization’s own servers, but they still hold sensitive information and often connect to internal systems through logins, APIs, and integrations.
They matter in cyber security because they expand the attack surface beyond core infrastructure. If attackers steal credentials, exploit a weak API, abuse excessive permissions, or find a misconfigured tenant, they may reach high-value records without touching the main network. In real attacks, these platforms are often used for phishing, identity theft, fraud, and extortion because the data they contain is rich enough to impersonate people or correlate records across services. Defenses include strong vendor oversight, least-privilege access, multi-factor authentication, logging, data minimization, and clear incident-response plans for every hosted system that touches sensitive information.
