A heat shield is a protective layer designed to absorb, reflect, or dissipate extreme heat so the structure behind it stays within safe limits. In spacecraft, it protects the vehicle during atmospheric reentry, when friction and compression can generate temperatures high enough to damage metals, ceramics, and electronics. Its value depends on material choice, thickness, bonding, and how well it handles erosion under stress.
In cyber security, the term is often used as a useful analogy for defensive layers that take the first удар of hostile pressure before core systems are exposed. Examples include DDoS mitigation, rate limiting, sandboxing, and other controls that absorb load, slow attackers, or contain damage. Attackers may try to overwhelm or bypass these shields, while defenders validate them through stress testing and failure recreation. The lesson is the same in both fields: a barrier is only effective if it survives the conditions it was built to face.
