In agentic AI, a harness is the software scaffolding around a model: the code that connects it to tools, memory, retrieval, guardrails, and execution paths. The model produces suggestions, but the harness decides what data it can see, which actions it may request, and whether those actions are actually carried out. In practice, the harness is the control layer that turns text generation into a governed system.
Harness design matters in cyber security because most real risk appears after the model speaks. A weak harness can let prompt injection steer tool calls, expose sensitive records through over-broad memory access, or trigger unsafe changes through unchecked automation. Defenders harden harnesses with least privilege, tool allowlists, input and output validation, sandboxed execution, approvals for high-impact actions, and detailed logging. A strong harness does not make the model smarter; it makes the system safer, more predictable, and easier to audit.
