Hardware Security Module (HSM)

A device designed to store and use cryptographic keys in protected hardware.

A Hardware Security Module is a tamper-resistant device built to create, store, and use cryptographic keys inside protected hardware. Instead of exposing a private key to an operating system or application server, an HSM keeps the key sealed and performs sensitive operations such as signing, decryption, and key generation internally.

HSMs matter because they reduce the chance of key theft, memory scraping, and software compromise. They are widely used for certificate authorities, payment systems, identity services, and high-trust signing workflows. However, an HSM is only as safe as the interface around it: weak protocols, legacy algorithms, or overly permissive command paths can sometimes let attackers abuse the device without ever extracting the key. In defense, strong access control, modern key sizes, limited signing privileges, and careful validation of inputs are essential.
