Hardware refresh cycle

The period between one generation of equipment and the next replacement wave.

A hardware refresh cycle is the planned interval between one generation of equipment and the next replacement wave. In security and IT operations, it covers when servers, laptops, network devices, storage, and accelerators are retired, repurposed, or upgraded because they are no longer cost-effective, supported, or performant enough for current workloads.

This matters in cyber security because older hardware often falls behind on firmware updates, driver support, and security features such as secure boot, memory protections, and hardware-based encryption. Attackers may target end-of-life devices that no longer receive patches, or abuse stale management interfaces and weak supply-chain controls around replacement. Defenders use the refresh cycle to reduce exposure, remove unsupported systems, and plan migration before a device becomes a blind spot. In AI and other high-capital environments, a slow refresh can also create operational risk: outdated gear may limit patching, resilience, and capacity for security tooling.
