A handle is the unique account name used to identify a profile on a platform, such as a social network, video site, or messaging service. It is the text people use to find, mention, and distinguish one account from another, even when display names, logos, or avatars look similar.
In cyber security, handles matter because attackers often create lookalike accounts to impersonate trusted brands, employees, or public figures. A convincing handle can be used in phishing, scam replies, fake support messages, or cloned profiles designed to lure victims off-platform. Defenders use handles for verification, monitoring, and brand consistency: matching the handle to official domains, checking for small spelling changes, and watching for unauthorized variations can help expose impersonation. A verified badge may add context, but the handle remains one of the first identifiers users should inspect before trusting a message or link.
