Hack-for-hire

A paid intrusion model where attackers perform cyber operations on behalf of a client.

Hack-for-hire is a paid intrusion model in which a client commissions attackers to break into systems, steal data, monitor communications, or sabotage targets. The operator may be a criminal group, a private contractor, or a proxy acting for another party, but the key feature is that the intrusion is done for someone else’s benefit.

This model matters because it turns cybercrime into a service: skills, infrastructure, and stolen access can be bought, reused, and scaled. Hack-for-hire campaigns often target research, emails, credentials, and business records, especially where stolen information has strategic or commercial value. Defenders look for signs of persistent access, unusual login locations, abnormal file downloads, and accounts reading data they normally would not need. Strong identity controls, access reviews, and monitoring for unusual retrieval behavior are common defenses against this type of operation.
