GW-BASIC is a BASIC interpreter for IBM-compatible personal computers. It let users type and run programs directly from a disk-based software environment instead of relying on BASIC built into ROM. As an interpreter, it executes source code at runtime, which made it useful for learning, automation, and small utilities on early PCs.
In cyber security, interpreters matter because they can become an extra way to execute code on a system. On legacy machines, emulators, or forensic images, GW-BASIC may still reveal old scripts or software dependencies. Defenders use that information to identify outdated platforms and reduce attack surface, while attackers can abuse any available scripting environment on unsupported systems to run commands, drop files, or chain other tools.
