Greenwashing

The practice of making environmental performance appear stronger than the evidence supports.

Greenwashing is the practice of making environmental performance look better than the evidence supports. In technical and compliance-heavy environments, it usually means broad, vague, or future-facing sustainability claims are presented as facts without enough data, testing, or documentation to prove them.

In cyber security, greenwashing matters because it is a trust problem that overlaps with digital risk. Security and sustainability claims often live on websites, product pages, investor decks, and emails, where they can be copied, amplified, or abused. Attackers may exploit weak governance by spoofing certifications, forging “green” announcements, or using misleading branding to support fraud and social engineering. Defenders reduce the risk with evidence trails, review workflows, claim ownership, and consistent approval of public statements. When claims can be checked quickly, deception becomes harder to scale.
