Granular controls

Fine-grained permissions that restrict specific actions on specific files.

Granular controls are fine-grained permissions that limit specific actions on specific files. Instead of a simple allow-or-deny rule, they can distinguish between reading, editing, copying, printing, forwarding, or sharing a document. In practice, these controls are often paired with identity checks, encryption, and policy engines so access decisions can be enforced at the file level.

They matter because many breaches begin with valid credentials or careless sharing rather than malware alone. Granular controls help reduce damage when a user account is abused, a partner receives too much access, or a sensitive file moves outside the original network. Defenders use them to enforce least privilege, prevent over-sharing, and revoke rights quickly. Attackers, by contrast, often try to bypass or abuse these permissions by stealing approved accounts, exporting data through permitted channels, or waiting for a file to be opened in an uncontrolled environment.
