Governed workflow

A controlled process where business rules are defined, managed, and reviewed outside of ad hoc files.

A governed workflow is a controlled process for making and changing business rules outside of ad hoc files. The rules are documented, assigned owners, reviewed, versioned, and approved in a system that can be audited. Instead of hiding logic in local spreadsheets, email threads, or personal notes, the organization keeps a clear source of truth for how decisions are made.

In cyber security, governed workflows reduce risk because they make sensitive processes easier to verify and harder to quietly change. They matter for access approvals, incident handling, change management, and finance controls. Attackers often look for unmanaged files and informal processes because those are easier to tamper with, bypass, or use to insert fraudulent logic. Defenders use governed workflows to enforce separation of duties, track approvals, detect unauthorized changes, and ensure automation follows explicit policy rather than hidden assumptions.
