Governance gate

A control point that requires review or approval before an AI output or code change can move forward.

A governance gate is a formal control point where an AI output, software change, or other work product must be reviewed and approved before it can move forward. The gate may require a human sign-off, policy checks, security scanning, or evidence that the change meets defined standards.

In cyber security, governance gates matter because speed without review can turn AI into a risk multiplier. Unchecked code may introduce vulnerabilities, unsafe dependencies, exposed secrets, or compliance issues. In attack scenarios, threat actors try to bypass these checkpoints by pushing malicious code, hiding prompt injection, or using automation to overwhelm reviewers. In defense, governance gates help ensure traceability, enforce least privilege, and stop unsafe AI-assisted changes from reaching production. They are a practical way to add accountability to model outputs, not just to the model itself.
