Geomatics is the science of collecting, processing, managing, and analyzing location-based data. It brings together surveying, mapping, remote sensing, photogrammetry, LiDAR, and GIS so organizations can build accurate digital models of land, assets, and infrastructure.
In cyber security, geomatics matters because this data is often operationally sensitive and valuable. Project files, coordinate databases, contractor portals, and GIS platforms can reveal critical facilities, construction plans, utilities, or government work. Attackers may target these systems through stolen credentials, weak file-sharing controls, or phishing against staff and partners. Defenders should protect access with strong identity controls, segment project data, encrypt sensitive files, and monitor for unusual downloads or sharing. In extortion cases, a geomatics firm may be named because its location data could have strategic or reputational value even before any confirmed breach is proven.
