General-purpose computer

A device intended to run a broad range of software tasks, not just one function.

A general-purpose computer is a device built to run many different kinds of software rather than one fixed job. Unlike a dedicated appliance or a narrow embedded controller, it can load new programs, handle varied input, and switch between tasks. Desktop PCs, servers, and many laptops are classic examples, but small systems can start to look more general-purpose when they gain richer operating systems, scripting, or app support.

In cyber security, this flexibility matters because more software freedom usually means a larger attack surface. A general-purpose computer may need stronger patching, privilege control, application policy, and monitoring than a single-function device. Attackers often target such systems because they can execute arbitrary code, host tools, and process untrusted data. Defenders also rely on the same property: security tools, logging agents, sandboxes, and analysis software are usually built for general-purpose machines, where the operating model is easier to manage and inspect.
