Gemspec metadata

Package fields that describe a gem and can also carry arbitrary strings.

Gemspec metadata is the set of fields in a Ruby gem specification that describes the package, such as its name, version, summary, authors, dependencies, and links. Some gemspec fields can also store arbitrary strings, which makes them flexible for developers but also useful to attackers.

In cyber security, this matters because package registries and build tools often trust metadata during publishing, indexing, and documentation generation. Abused metadata can hide unwanted content, trigger unexpected processing, or help malicious packages blend in with legitimate ones. Defenders should treat gemspec values as untrusted input: validate fields, limit what automated pipelines execute or render, and review packages before release. In supply chain attacks, metadata is rarely the payload by itself, but it can be the delivery channel or the place where malicious intent is embedded.
