Gateway role

A perimeter function that brokers remote access into internal services or applications.

A gateway role is a perimeter function that brokers remote access between users and internal services or applications. It usually sits in front of the network, handling tasks such as authentication, session setup, traffic forwarding, and sometimes policy checks before a user reaches a protected resource.

In cyber security, the gateway role matters because it becomes a trust broker: if it is misconfigured or bypassed, an attacker may skip the intended login path and reach internal systems as if they were legitimate. Defenders therefore treat gateway devices as high-value assets, mapping which features are enabled, reviewing authentication flows, and patching edge appliances quickly. In attacks, gateway roles are attractive because they concentrate access control in one place; in defense, they are a control point for MFA, federation, logging, and access policy enforcement.
