Gateway mode

A setup where an appliance sits between external mail traffic and internal systems.

Gateway mode is a deployment pattern where a security appliance sits between external mail traffic and internal email systems. In this position, the device receives messages from the internet, inspects them, applies policy, and then forwards approved mail to the organization’s servers. It acts as a control point for filtering, routing, and authentication decisions.

This matters because a gateway is part of the trust boundary. If attackers find a flaw in the appliance, they may be able to affect mail flow before traffic reaches internal systems. In real attacks, gateway-mode devices are attractive targets for path traversal, file-write, or configuration abuse because they are exposed to remote requests and often hold sensitive state. Defenders should treat gateway appliances as high-priority infrastructure: restrict management access, monitor for unexpected file changes, and patch quickly when remotely reachable vulnerabilities are disclosed.
