Gamma-ray observatory

A space instrument designed to detect high-energy gamma rays.

A gamma-ray observatory is a spacecraft or space instrument built to detect high-energy gamma rays from astronomical sources. Because gamma rays are absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere, these observatories must operate in orbit and rely on detectors, onboard processing, telemetry, and ground control to collect usable science data.

In cyber security, gamma-ray observatories matter because they are remote, high-value systems with limited physical access. Attackers may try to interfere with command links, spoof telemetry, tamper with software updates, or disrupt ground systems that manage the mission. Defenders focus on authenticated commands, segmented networks, hardened flight software, and monitoring for anomalous behavior. Protecting the observatory protects both the science payload and the mission’s ability to remain under operator control.
