Functional block

A unit in a system that performs one defined task, such as receiving, processing, or outputting a signal.

A functional block is a self-contained unit in a system that performs one defined task, such as receiving a signal, filtering it, converting it, or producing an output. In block diagrams, complex hardware or software is described as a chain of these units so engineers can see how data or signals move through the system. In software-defined radio, for example, a receiver may be split into blocks for tuning, demodulation, decoding, and display.

In cyber security, this modular view matters because it makes analysis and defense easier. Attackers may study each block to find weak points, such as an insecure input stage or a poorly validated processing step. Defenders use the same idea to inspect signal flow, verify boundaries, and isolate faulty or malicious behavior. When a system is built from clear functional blocks, it is easier to audit, test, replace, or harden without changing the whole design.
