Fully managed cloud

A cloud service model in which the provider handles more of the service lifecycle, including operation and maintenance.

A fully managed cloud service is a model where the provider takes on much of the operational burden of the platform or application, including deployment, patching, maintenance, monitoring, scaling, and support. The customer still owns important security decisions such as identity, access control, data handling, workload configuration, and policy settings. It is “managed” because the provider runs more of the service lifecycle, but it is not “hands off.”

In cyber security, this model matters because it changes the shared responsibility boundary. A fully managed service can reduce exposure to missed patches, weak system administration, and inconsistent maintenance, but it can also create blind spots if teams assume the provider covers security tasks that still belong to the customer. Attackers often exploit this confusion through misconfigurations, excessive privileges, unsafe integrations, or poor credential hygiene. Defenders use fully managed cloud services to improve consistency, centralize logging, and offload routine operations, but they still need clear ownership, reviewable policies, and incident response plans.
