Frontier models

A platform’s highest-capability model tier, usually reserved for more complex or sensitive use cases.

Frontier models are a platform’s most capable AI systems, usually the highest tier available to customers. They are often used for complex reasoning, long-context tasks, tool use, or sensitive workflows where lower-tier models may not be strong enough. Because they are the most powerful offerings, they are also the models most likely to receive tighter access controls, stricter policy checks, and special data-handling rules.

In cyber security, frontier models matter because they can be valuable targets for abuse and high-risk automation. Attackers may try to use them for phishing, malware development, reconnaissance, or multi-step agentic abuse. Defenders may restrict these models with approval gates, retention limits, and safety monitoring to reduce exposure of prompts and responses. The term also appears in privacy and governance discussions, where operators must balance model capability with logging, monitoring, and data minimization.
