A fraudulent listing is a fake or misleading offer posted to trick a buyer into paying for something that does not exist, is not valid, or is not as described. It may look like a normal marketplace ad, ticket offer, rental, or storefront, but its real purpose is deception.
In cybersecurity, fraudulent listings are a form of social engineering. They exploit urgency, scarcity, and trust to push people into quick payments or off-platform communication where protections are weaker. Attackers may copy logos, use stolen photos, create convincing seller profiles, or present a “last chance” deal to reduce scrutiny. Defenders look for warning signs such as mismatched contact details, unusual payment requests, newly created accounts, and offers that seem too good or too available after long search. Verifying the seller and using protected payment channels can reduce the risk.
