A fraud index is a measurement tool that tracks changes in fraudulent activity over time. It usually turns raw events, such as flagged transactions, chargebacks, or suspicious account actions, into a trend that security teams can monitor. By showing whether fraud is rising, falling, or reversing direction, the index helps defenders spot changes that a single snapshot can hide.
In cyber security, fraud indexes matter because attack pressure often shifts gradually before it becomes obvious. A rising index can point to card testing, account takeover attempts, bot-driven abuse, or broader abuse of an online service. Defenders use these trends to tune thresholds, add verification steps, review transaction patterns, and compare risk across periods. A fraud index does not prove a specific attack method, but it gives an early warning that controls may need to be tightened.
