Forward-deployed engineering

engineers working close to the business workflow to turn AI ideas into production systems.

Forward-deployed engineering is a delivery model where engineers work close to the customer or business workflow, instead of staying isolated in a product or research team. The goal is to turn AI ideas into production systems that fit real operations, data paths, and approval processes. In security terms, this matters because the workflow becomes part of the control surface: who can access data, which tools an agent can call, and what actions need human review.

In agentic AI systems, forward-deployed engineers help define scope, least-privilege permissions, tool allowlists, logging, and checkpoints. That reduces common risks such as prompt injection, tool misuse, unauthorized data movement, and unsafe automated actions. On defense teams, the same approach is used to make systems reviewable and auditable before autonomy increases. It is less about building a demo and more about embedding security boundaries into the operating workflow from day one.
