Flight authorization is a permission workflow that approves a drone operation before takeoff, usually for a specific place, time, altitude, and purpose. In U-space and similar airspace systems, the operator submits flight details and the service checks whether the request fits local rules, geofences, and nearby traffic constraints. The result may be an approval, a rejection, or a request for more conditions.
This matters in cyber security because authorization is part of the control plane for the sky. If it is bypassed, spoofed, or disrupted, an unauthorized drone can enter sensitive airspace, complicating detection and response. Defenders rely on strong identity checks, secure APIs, integrity protection, and audit logs so the approval decision cannot be forged or silently altered. In real attacks or defenses, flight authorization helps separate legitimate operators from hostile or careless ones and gives authorities a machine-readable way to enforce safety before a drone becomes a physical threat.
