Fire test

A controlled evaluation of how a material or object behaves under fire exposure.

A fire test is a controlled evaluation of how a material, device, or enclosure behaves when exposed to flame or high heat. It measures properties such as ignition, spread of burning, smoke output, melting, and structural failure. In safety engineering, the goal is to see whether a component can survive or contain fire long enough to reduce harm.

In cyber security, fire testing matters because many systems depend on physical hardware: routers, access control panels, batteries, cables, sensors, and 3D-printed parts. A component that works electrically may still fail dangerously under heat, creating outages, data loss, or a path for attackers who exploit weak enclosures and damaged wiring. Fire tests help defenders choose safer materials, validate product claims, and assess whether a device remains usable during a fire event or thermal attack. They are also used to verify compliance with safety standards and to guide secure deployment near hot equipment or ignition sources.
