A fine-grained token is an access token scoped to only the specific resources and actions an application needs. Instead of granting broad API or repository access, it may be limited to one project, one dataset, read-only access, or a single workflow. This narrow scope reduces the blast radius if the token is stolen, logged, or accidentally exposed in code, chat logs, or automation output.
In cyber security, fine-grained tokens are a core defense for cloud services, developer platforms, and AI agent systems. If an attacker compromises a process that holds the token, limited permissions can prevent lateral movement and reduce the chance of data theft or destructive changes. They are most effective when combined with short lifetimes, rotation, revocation, and vault-based secret storage. In practice, defenders use them to separate production access from testing and to ensure that an autonomous agent can only touch the exact resources it needs.
