The Find My network is Apple’s crowd-sourced locating system for supported items such as AirTags and some accessories. When a compatible tracker is out of direct range of its owner, nearby Apple devices can detect its Bluetooth signal and relay an approximate location back to the owner through Apple’s service, without exposing the nearby device user’s identity.
In cybersecurity, this matters because a system built for recovery can also be abused for tracking. Attackers or stalkers may hide a tracker in a bag, shipment, or vehicle to follow movement over time, while defenders use the same ecosystem to find lost assets and investigate suspicious tags. Apple added unwanted-tracking alerts and other safety controls to reduce abuse, but security teams still need to inspect inbound items, watch for unusual Bluetooth beacons, and treat unexpected location visibility as a privacy and chain-of-custody risk.
