Financial instrument

a tradable contract that has monetary value.

A financial instrument is a tradable contract with monetary value, such as a bond, share, derivative, or tokenized claim. In digital asset systems, a token may represent a financial instrument rather than a simple payment token, which means the token is tied to legal rights, ownership rules, and trading restrictions.

This matters in cyber security because the security of the software layer directly affects the value of the underlying asset. If attackers compromise wallets, exchange accounts, issuer systems, or smart-contract controls, they may be able to transfer, freeze, counterfeit, or misroute instruments. Defenders therefore need strong identity controls, transaction signing, audit logs, segregation of duties, and compliance checks that verify the token still matches the legal contract it represents. In practice, the threat is not only theft of code or keys, but also unauthorized changes to the instrument’s meaning.
