Field-level security

A control that limits which data fields a user can view or edit.

Field-level security is an access-control setting that determines which individual data fields a user can view, create, or edit. Unlike record-level permissions, which decide whether someone can reach an entire object or row, field-level controls can hide specific values inside an otherwise accessible record. This is important for protecting sensitive details such as personal identifiers, payment data, internal notes, API keys, or administrative flags.

In real environments, field-level security helps prevent overexposure in portals, SaaS apps, and APIs where some access is intentional but not all data should be visible. Attackers often look for misconfigured field permissions because a public page or guest account may still reveal sensitive fields through forms, search results, exports, or API responses. Defenders should review guest profiles, default field visibility, and API output regularly, and test access as an anonymous or low-privilege user. Proper field-level security reduces data theft even when broader access is unavoidable.
