Fallback logic

The safe behavior a system uses when an input or subsystem becomes uncertain.

Fallback logic is the safe behavior a system uses when a sensor, service, or input becomes uncertain, unavailable, or inconsistent. Instead of guessing, the system switches to a known-degraded mode: it may stop a risky action, reduce functionality, request confirmation, or fail closed. In cyber security, this matters because uncertainty is often where attacks succeed. A design that continues operating with untrusted data can turn a temporary fault into a security weakness.

Real defenses use fallback logic in authentication, access control, robotics, and monitoring. For example, if a verification service times out, the secure choice is usually to deny access rather than assume success. If telemetry looks corrupted, a device may disable automation and alert an operator. Attackers often try to trigger bad fallback behavior by causing timeouts, blocking dependencies, or manipulating inputs so a system drops into an insecure default. Good fallback logic makes the safe path the easiest path.
