Fake decryptors

tools that claim to restore data but may be fraudulent or ineffective.

Fake decryptors are tools that claim to recover files encrypted by ransomware, but they may be fraudulent, incomplete, or technically incapable of restoring the data. In some cases, they are simple wrappers that display progress while doing little or nothing; in others, they are used to extract more money from a victim by pretending that recovery is underway.

They matter because ransomware recovery is often time-sensitive and stressful. Attackers or dishonest intermediaries can exploit that pressure by offering a decryptor, validation service, or cleanup utility that appears legitimate. A fake decryptor can delay incident response, increase costs, and give false confidence that systems are being restored. Defenders should verify the provider, test any recovery tool on isolated copies, preserve evidence before making changes, and prefer known-good backups and trusted incident responders over unverified claims.
