External Services

Third-party systems or APIs that an AI agent can use to fetch data or trigger actions.

External services are third-party systems, APIs, or cloud tools that an AI agent can call to retrieve data or perform actions. They extend what the agent can do beyond its own model by letting it query databases, send messages, update tickets, or trigger workflows in other environments.

In cyber security, external services matter because every connection expands the trust boundary. If an attacker can poison an input, steal an API key, or abuse an overly permissive connector, the agent may expose data or execute harmful actions. Defenders therefore treat each service as a controlled dependency: use least-privilege access, strong authentication, scoped tokens, logging, and approval steps for risky actions. In practice, secure agent deployments track which service was called, what data was sent, and whether the response influenced a decision. That traceability helps detect abuse and supports rollback when an automated action goes wrong.
