Extension manifest

The configuration file that defines what a VS Code extension contributes and how it activates.

An extension manifest is the configuration file that tells Visual Studio Code what an extension is, what it contributes, and when it should run. It typically declares items such as the extension’s name, the features it adds, and activation events that trigger its code. In VS Code, this means a package that looks like a theme or simple add-on can still include executable behavior if the manifest points to a main script.

This matters in cyber security because attackers can hide malicious functionality inside trusted software packaging. A reviewer may see a harmless category label, but the manifest can reveal unexpected activation logic, bundled JavaScript, or dependencies that turn an extension into a delivery mechanism. Defenders inspect the manifest to verify that a theme only contributes styling, check for suspicious main entries or activation events, and compare the manifest with the packaged files before installation. In practice, the manifest is one of the fastest ways to separate a cosmetic add-on from code that can run.
