Extension Manager

The JupyterLab feature used to discover, install, and manage extensions.

The Extension Manager is the JupyterLab interface for discovering, installing, enabling, and removing extensions. Extensions add features such as new file viewers, UI panels, and workflow integrations, but they also expand the trust boundary of the application because they can introduce additional code and permissions into a notebook environment.

In cyber security, the Extension Manager matters because it governs one of the main paths by which third-party functionality enters JupyterLab. If allowlist checks, package sourcing, or approval workflows are weak, an attacker may try to place a malicious or misleading extension into a shared environment. Defenders use the same control to reduce risk by restricting approved extensions, auditing what is installed, and disabling unnecessary add-on features. In practice, extension management is part of hardening the control plane around notebooks, not just a convenience feature for users.
