Extended mind

the idea that tools can become part of human cognitive work.

The extended mind is the idea that tools can become part of human cognitive work. In cyber security, that means analysts do not think with memory and judgment alone; they also rely on ticketing systems, SIEM dashboards, threat intel feeds, password managers, playbooks, and AI copilots to store context and shape decisions.

This matters because a tool that influences reasoning also becomes part of the attack surface. If attackers poison data, tamper with logs, or feed misleading prompts into an assistant, they can steer what defenders notice and how they respond. Good defenses treat these tools as trusted-but-verifiable: preserve provenance, limit access, require human review for high-impact decisions, and test whether automation is quietly biasing judgment. The key lesson is practical: when tools extend cognition, securing the toolchain is also securing the thinking process.
