An export path is the route data takes out of a service. It can be a direct download, a sync client, an API endpoint, an admin tool, or a bulk export feature. In cloud storage, messaging, and SaaS platforms, the export path is what lets an owner recover files, migrate to another provider, or keep an independent backup.
In cyber security, export paths matter because they define portability and reduce lock-in. A service with weak or hidden export options can trap data if the account is suspended, the vendor changes terms, or the platform shuts down. Attackers also abuse export paths: once they gain valid access, they may use normal download or API functions to exfiltrate large amounts of data without triggering obvious malware defenses. Defenders look for clear export controls, audit logs, rate limits, and tested recovery procedures so data can leave safely and predictably when needed.
