Exploitability window

The time between discovery of a weakness and when it can be used in an attack.

An exploitability window is the time between when a weakness is discovered and when an attacker can reliably use it in the real world. The gap may be short for public flaws with working exploit code, or longer when a bug requires research, access, or complex chaining. Security teams care about this window because it defines how much time they have to patch, isolate, or otherwise reduce exposure before the weakness becomes a practical attack path.

In defense, shrinking the exploitability window means faster detection, better asset inventory, automated patching, and rehearsed incident response. In attacks, shortening the window is an advantage: adversaries can use automation, shared exploit kits, or AI-assisted analysis to move from discovery to weaponization more quickly. The concept matters in vulnerability management because not every flaw is equally urgent; the ones with a small exploitability window demand the fastest action, especially on internet-facing or business-critical systems.
