Exploit weaponization

the process of turning a newly disclosed flaw into a working attack.

Exploit weaponization is the process of turning a newly disclosed vulnerability into a working attack. A proof of concept may show that a flaw exists, but weaponization means an attacker has refined it into code that can reliably target real systems, often with payload delivery, persistence, or privilege escalation.

This matters because the gap between disclosure and exploitation can be very short. Once a flaw is weaponized, defenders face immediate risk from scanning, mass exploitation, and ransomware deployment. In practice, weaponized exploits may appear in exploit kits, botnets, or custom intrusion tools, then be used before many organizations have patched. Defenses focus on rapid patching, exposure reduction, threat intelligence, and monitoring for suspicious traffic or abnormal process behavior. The faster a flaw is weaponized, the less time defenders have to respond.
