Execution risk

the chance that a plan fails because it cannot be carried out effectively.

Execution risk is the chance that a plan fails because it cannot be carried out effectively. In cyber security, this matters as much as the idea itself: a strong control, detection rule, or response plan is only useful if teams can deploy it correctly, keep it updated, and operate it under pressure. Weak coordination, unrealistic timelines, missing dependencies, and poor handoff between security, IT, and engineering all increase execution risk.

Attackers exploit execution risk by betting that defenders will miss a patch window, misconfigure a control, or fail to follow through on incident response steps. Defenders reduce it by making plans specific, rehearsing them, assigning ownership, and measuring whether controls work in practice. In other words, the security failure is often not the design of the defense, but the gap between the design and the actual execution.
