Execution Layer

The part of an agentic system that runs tools, workflows, and actions in the real environment.

The execution layer is the part of an agentic system that actually runs tools, workflows, and actions in the real environment. It is where model output becomes side effects: API calls, file changes, database queries, tickets, messages, or cloud operations.

This layer matters because most security risk appears when decisions turn into action. If the execution layer is too permissive, an agent can chain legitimate steps into an unintended outcome, even without any single obviously dangerous command. Defenders therefore treat it as a control point for tool allowlists, scoped credentials, logging, approvals, rate limits, and safe failure handling. In attacks, abuse often targets the execution layer by prompting an agent to call the wrong tool, repeat an action, or combine allowed actions in a harmful sequence. In defenses, strong execution-layer design limits what the agent can do, records what it tried, and makes every action attributable.
