Evidence-first workflow

A process that gathers data before allowing conclusions to be stated.

An evidence-first workflow is a diagnostic process that requires data before a conclusion is stated. In cyber security, that means collecting logs, endpoint telemetry, network traces, hashes, alerts, and configuration details before naming the threat, root cause, or attacker behavior. The goal is to keep analysis falsifiable: every claim should be tied to observable evidence, not intuition or a persuasive guess.

This matters because rushed conclusions can hide real compromise, waste response time, and create false confidence. In incident response, analysts use evidence-first methods to compare competing hypotheses, such as phishing, malware, misconfiguration, or benign activity, and then rule them out with artifacts. Defenders also use this approach in detection engineering, threat hunting, and forensics by demanding a baseline and proof before escalating. In practice, an evidence-first workflow reduces confirmation bias and makes AI-assisted security tools safer, because they must explain what data supports the answer instead of merely agreeing with the user.
