Ethics are the principles used to decide what is responsible, fair, and acceptable when technology is built or used. In cyber security, ethics guide choices about data collection, monitoring, access control, vulnerability research, AI use, and incident response. They help teams decide not only what is technically possible, but what should be done.
Ethics matter because security work often involves sensitive information and powerful tools. A defender may need to inspect logs or test a system, but ethical practice requires authorization, proportionality, privacy protection, and clear limits. In real attacks, ethical boundaries are absent: threat actors exploit trust, steal data, or abuse legitimate tools for harm. In defense, ethics supports responsible disclosure, least-privilege design, transparent policies, and careful AI governance so security controls protect users without creating unnecessary risk or bias.
