Escalation logic is the set of rules an AI system uses to decide when it should continue automatically and when it should hand a task to a human operator. It usually combines confidence scores, risk thresholds, policy checks, and business impact. In the drive-thru example, good escalation logic lets the system pause on an unclear order, preserve context, and transfer the conversation without making the customer repeat everything.
In cyber security, escalation logic matters because automation can safely handle routine events, but uncertain or high-impact cases need human judgment. Security tools use it to route suspicious logins to analysts, require extra verification, block dangerous actions, or escalate alerts from a SOAR playbook to incident response. Attackers may try to exploit weak logic by creating alert floods, hiding in edge cases, or causing the system to overtrust low-confidence results. Strong escalation logic reduces false confidence and helps defenders respond faster without losing control.
